Chapter 12: The Cold War (1945–1960)
Summary
By the end of World War II, United States relationship with the Soviet Union had fallen apart due to the fear that the Soviet Union was attempting world domination. This world domination, which also can be described as communism, forced President Truman and President Eisenhower to aid other countries who were struggling against communist movements. President Eisenhower's threat of nuclear weapons convinced the communists to sign a cease-fire, but there was no clear victory in the war. Tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union led to conflicts in countries throughout the world. Americans began to fear that communists in the United States were working for the Soviet Union. The U.S. Congress started investigations of potential communists, which soon led to reckless and misleading accusations that often discredited people.
