Chapter 3: The Development of Industrial America (1865–1914)
Summary
A combination of factors led to rapid industrial expansion that transformed the economy and lifestyle of Americans. In the late 1800s debate grew over how the increasing number of large corporations in the United States should be regulated. During this time, corruption had also plagued politicians. Industrial workers dealing with harsh conditions organized unions and other groups to fight for worker's rights. Many immigrants traveled to the United States from Asia and Eastern and Southern Europe in search of a better life, but faced hardships upon arrival. At the end of the Nineteenth Century, more Americans began moving to cities and industrial growth established a new middle class and larger cities. This led the way for targeting education, entertainment, and religion to the masses. After Reconstruction, immigrants, women, and African Americans faced discrimination.
